Mandatory from 18 Feb 2027
The Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 is the most advanced Digital Product Passport requirement in the EU today - the first to move from framework to a binding, dated obligation. From 18 February 2027, every EV, industrial and light means of transport (LMT) battery placed on the EU market above 2kWh must carry a unique, QR-code-linked battery passport.
What a batteries passport is expected to cover
- Manufacturer and battery model identity, plus a unique product identifier
- Carbon footprint declaration and performance class
- Material composition, including recycled-content share of cobalt, lithium, nickel and lead
- Performance and durability data: rated capacity, expected lifetime, state of health
- Safety information and supply-chain due-diligence disclosures
- Collection, take-back and recycling instructions for end of life or second-life use
Where it stands
Batteries are the first category where the passport obligation actually bites - mandatory from 18 February 2027, with the delegated acts and technical standards already largely in place. See the full rollout timeline →
